Lead-Acid & Lithium Deep-Cycle RV Batteries Size Chart

Group Size

Refers to the battery’s physical dimensions.

Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)

Is the amount of power needed to start your car in cold weather. If the CCA meets or exceeds your vehicle’s requirement, you’re good to go.

Cranking Amps (CA)

Measured at warmer temperatures, this shows how the battery performs under ideal conditions. CCA is a better indicator for tough, cold starts.

Reserve Capacity (RC)

Indicates how long your battery can provide power to your vehicle’s electrical system if the alternator stops working.

Ampere Hour (Ah)

Measures how much energy the battery can store. Higher numbers mean more capacity.

RV Deep-Cycle Battery FAQs

Can You Use a Deep-Cycle Battery in an RV?

Yes, deep-cycle batteries are ideal for RVs because they provide steady power to appliances over extended periods. Unlike a typical starting battery that delivers short bursts for engine starting, deep-cycle batteries can repeatedly discharge and recharge, which is essential for RV or motorhome living. Also, because the nominal voltage for a marine battery is 12 volts, it's compatible with your RV’s electrical system. When selecting one, consider group size, cold cranking amps (CCA) and amp-hours to meet your needs.

What's the Difference Between a Marine RV Battery and a Deep-Cycle Battery?

“Marine/RV battery" and "deep-cycle battery" are terms that categorize batteries in two different ways: What they can do versus where they’re used. All marine/RV batteries have dual-post marine-style terminals. Some are deep-cycle batteries, and some are cranking or dual-purpose batteries. Marine batteries may serve dual functions while traditional deep-cycle batteries focus solely on deep cycling. Deep-cycle batteries can have an automotive-style battery post, a utility post or a marine/RV post.

What Is a Downside of Using Deep-Cycle Batteries?

A downside of deep-cycle batteries is their weight and bulk, which can limit convenience. A lead-acid battery needs regular maintenance, such as monitoring water levels and proper charging to prevent sulfation and reduced battery life. They also generally have lower energy density than lithium batteries, storing less energy for the same size or weight, which is crucial in weight-sensitive applications like RVs.
