Types of Marine Batteries

Trust Interstate for the Reliable Marine Battery Advice

What's the Difference Between a Marine Battery and a Regular Battery?

Marine batteries are built for durability and long-lasting power. They have thicker plates and are 15% more vibration-resistant than regular car batteries, making them better suited for rough water conditions. Unlike car batteries, which deliver short bursts of high power to start engines, marine batteries, especially deep-cycle types, are designed to handle repeated deep discharges, making them ideal for powering electronics.

How Long Will a Marine Battery Last?

Most marine batteries last 2 to 5 years, with 3 to 4 years being typical, though this depends greatly on the battery type and how well it is cared for. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries have the longest lifespan, often lasting 10 or more years. Lead-acid batteries (flooded or AGM) generally last 2 to 6 years. Proper maintenance, such as charging after each use and storing the battery in a cool place, is essential for maximizing lifespan.

What Type of Battery Is Best for Marine Use?

For most boaters, sealed AGM batteries are the best all-around choice. They are maintenance-free, widely available, and more affordable upfront, making them a practical option for everyday use. For high-performance or deep-cycle applications, however, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are the superior option. They offer high energy density, can be fully discharged to 100% depth of discharge without damage, and typically last 10 years or more, making them a worthwhile long-term investment for serious boaters.
