Maintenance Tip

Maximizing the Performance of Your Jeep Grand Cherokee Car Battery

Regularly test your Jeep Grand Cherokee battery as it ages, or if you notice issues such as slow engine cranking, dimming lights, warning lights or difficulty starting the engine.

If you observe any of these signs or are uncertain about the condition of your Jeep Grand Cherokee battery, take it to an Interstate All Battery Center for a professional inspection. Our battery experts can conduct a battery test to assess its condition and determine whether a Jeep battery replacement is necessary. Engaging in routine maintenance, such as keeping terminals clean and checking battery cables, may help extend the lifespan of your Jeep Grand Cherokee battery. However, when signs of weakness emerge or the battery reaches the end of its expected life, prompt replacement is recommended to avoid the inconvenience of being stranded with a dead battery.

Understanding the Lifespan of Your Jeep Grand Cherokee Battery

The lifespan of your Jeep Grand Cherokee car battery depends on several factors, including the battery type, climate, driving habits and maintenance. Typically, a car battery lasts 3 to 5 years. Nevertheless, individual batteries may vary, with some lasting longer while others require replacement sooner.

  • Regular Battery Maintenance: Check your battery terminals, battery posts and connections for tightness and corrosion every three months.
  • Be Wary of Accessories: Modern vehicles are often equipped with features such as stereos, brake lights, backup cameras, start-stop technology, heated seats and navigation devices that require significant electrical power. Battery accessories or plug-in devices might increase the demand on your vehicle's electrical system and drain your battery if it does not have adequate reserve capacity. Make sure all accessories are turned off when your car is not running.
  • Drive Your Vehicle Often: Driving your vehicle regularly for longer periods helps keep the battery properly charged. Try to avoid frequent short trips—generally anything under 30 minutes—because they don’t give the battery enough time to recharge and can reduce its lifespan.
  • Extreme Temperatures: Extreme temperature swings, both hot and cold, can negatively affect battery life. If you live in a colder climate, ensure you select a battery with adequate cold-cranking amps (CCA) to start reliably in winter. If you are experiencing slow engine crank in the winter months, you might not have adequate electrical starting power.
  • Regularly Inspect Your Vehicle's Battery: If your automotive battery is three years or older, you should get it checked at least twice a year.

How do I test my Jeep Grand Cherokee battery?

To properly test your car battery, you'll need a multimeter, a type of battery tester. You can find one at any auto part store or online.

  1. Turn on the headlights and leave them on for about two minutes
  2. Set the multimeter to 0 to 20 volts
  3. Turn off the headlights
  4. Locate the battery and connect the multimeter to the positive and negative terminals
  5. Check the multimeter screen
  6. It would be best to set the resting voltage around 12.5 volts.
  7. Now, start the car
  8. Take a look at the meter

You want to have a voltage higher than 13 volts. If the voltage is below 13 volts, you may have a bad alternator or a dead battery.

If your battery does not reach 13 volts, you can always try cleaning the connectors or charging the battery.

You can also check out our "How to Test a Car Battery" page to see a battery test in action.

If you don't have a multimeter, you can always take your vehicle to one of our Interstate Batteries pros. We're always here to help you determine your battery's health.

If your battery tests within the normal range but the warning light is still on, there may be a problem with the battery current sensor. In that case, additional testing of the electrical system is recommended.
