About Dodge Journey Car Batteries

The Dodge Journey, a popular mid-size SUV, has specific battery requirements that must be met for optimal performance:

  • Battery Size: BCI Group Size 86
  • Minimum Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): 525

These car battery requirements are the same for model years 2009 to 2020, regardless of whether your Journey engine is 2.4 liters, 3.5 liters or 3.6-liters.

The Dodge Journey Battery Is Located Behind the Driver-side Front Wheel

Quick Facts

  • 🛈 Battery Location: In front of driver-side front wheel, behind splash shield
  • 🛈 Vent hose: Must be connected to redirect gases away from the cabin
  • 🛈 Tools needed: Screwdriver, 10 mm socket/ratchet, car jack
  • 🛈 Access tip: Removing the wheel is commonly required

Unlike most vehicles, the battery for the Dodge Journey isn’t in the engine bay. It’s located in front of the driver's side front wheel, behind the splash shield.

This means the Dodge Journey battery should be connected to a vent hose. Like any other battery not installed in the engine compartment, it should have a vent hose to redirect gases from the passenger cabin. So, before you finish replacing it, check those battery terminals and vent hose.

In most models, you might need to remove the wheel to access the battery. You’ll need a screwdriver, a 10mm socket wrench or ratcheting wrench and a car jack.

Safety note: Always park on level ground, set the parking brake, use jack stands, and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s procedures.

Making the Most of Your Dodge Journey Car Battery

As a reliable people-mover, the Dodge Journey probably gets taken on a lot of short drives.

However, driving for just 10 to 15 minutes can steadily drain a Dodge Journey battery because that’s not enough time for the alternator to fully replenish the charge inside.

Want to keep your Dodge Journey running well? Take a journey at highway speeds for about an hour. Doing that once a week can keep your battery lasting longer than the average 3-5 years. (Keep in mind that factors like battery type, size, weather and driving habits can affect this lifespan.)

Essential maintenance tasks such as keeping the battery tray and terminals clean from acidic corrosion and checking the battery's cables may also help to prolong the life of your Dodge Journey battery. Still, when your battery shows signs of weakness or reaches the end of its expected lifespan, it's a good idea to replace it to avoid being stranded with a dead battery.

Maintenance Tip

Do I need a battery test?

If it’s been 3–5 years since your last replacement—or your Journey is feeling a little sluggish—a quick test can save you from a no-start.

  • Slow engine crank
  • Dimming interior or head lights
  • Battery/charging warning light

If you experience any of these signs or are unsure about the condition of your Dodge Journey battery, it's a good idea to have your battery inspected by a professional.

FAQs

How do you start a Dodge Journey with a dead battery?

You can jump-start a Dodge Journey using a remote terminal, a single stud with a red cap and a plus sign in the engine bay. That stud, found in any vehicle that has a battery not in the engine bay, gives you easy access to the battery when you need to jump-start your Dodge Journey.

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Look for a single red terminal with a plus sign. It’ll be near the edge of the engine bay.
  3. Connect the red clamp to it.
  4. Look for any other solid metal stud labeled with a negative sign.
  5. Connect the black clamp to that.
  6. Start the functioning car first, and then try starting your Dodge Journey.
  7. If it works, disconnect the cables, starting with the black clamp.

Once your car is up and running, check the charging output. An output above 13.5 volts usually indicates your alternator is doing its job.

Note: Reconnect vent hoses to batteries installed in the passenger compartment, trunk, engine bay or elsewhere in the vehicle to allow proper venting out of the vehicle. Connect vehicle vent hoses to the battery vent port. Then plug the battery’s opposite-side vent port with a vent plug.
