What Types of Replacement Batteries Do Scanners, Walkie Talkies and Two-Way Radios Use?
The most common battery types used in scanners, walkie talkies and two-way radios are alkaline, nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) with nickel cadmium batteries (NiCd) also being used for two-way radios on occasion.
Alkaline batteries are widely available and affordable. They have a decent life expectancy and are suitable for general use. However, as primary batteries, they are not rechargeable. They last quite a while on the shelf, but once they run out, you’ll need a replacement. Alkaline batteries are also relatively heavy compared to other options.
NiMH batteries offer a longer overall life expectancy compared to alkaline batteries. They are rechargeable and can be used multiple times. NiMH batteries have a higher capacity and are lighter compared to alkaline batteries. However, they tend to self-discharge over time, losing their charge when not in use.
Li-ion batteries are the most advanced battery type commonly used in electronic devices. They have a longer life expectancy than both alkaline and NiMH batteries. Rechargeable Li-ion batteries are lightweight and have a high energy density, making them ideal for portable devices. They are also rechargeable, but they require special chargers so that the original Li-ion battery is not overcharged.
Below is a comparison table of the devices and types of batteries used:
| Alkaline Batteries | Nickel‑metal Hydride (NiMH) | Lithium‑Ion Batteries (Li‑ion) | Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery Life (Reuse After Charging) | 10 cycles | >100 cycles | 300–500 cycles | ~2,000 cycles |
