Dodge Charger Battery
The roar of a Dodge Charger resonates with car enthusiasts, but even the mightiest machines rely on a powerful heart: the battery. If your Charger battery does need a battery replacement, we can show you which one your Charger needs.
About Dodge Charger Car Batteries
Most Dodge Chargers require either 94R/H7 or 49/H8 batteries, except for those in model years 1966 to 1977, which require a group size 27 battery.
Additionally, the Dodge Chargers from model years 2006 and after have batteries vented outside the vehicle. This means the car battery of the Dodge Charger is not in the engine compartment. After 2006, most Dodge Chargers have their car battery in the trunk.
If equipped with a police package, the Dodge Charger V6 and V8 models require 49/H8 battery. (Group 49 sizes align with the DIN size H8.) Models without the police package may require a battery in either group size 94R or a 49, depending on the model year.
Model years 2006 to 2022 of the Dodge Charger require:
- Battery Size: BCI Group Size 49 or 94R
- Minimum Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): 730 – 850, depending on model year
- Battery Size: BCI Group Size 24 or 27
- Minimum Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): 350 – 440, depending on model year
Before disconnecting the battery on some 2008 and 2009 Dodge Avenger models, make sure to remove the feed fuse. Some of those models come with a MyGig radio, and it’s vital to disconnect the feed fuse before disconnecting the battery on those models.
The 2021-2022 models of the Dodge Charger with the police package require a valve-regulated AGM battery.
Before replacing the battery on your Dodge Charger, verify the type of battery it requires, either AGM or non-AGM.

Dodge Charger Battery Lifespan and Maintenance
The lifespan of your Dodge Charger car battery depends on several factors, such as battery type, local climate, driving habits and maintenance practices. A standard car battery typically lasts around 3 to 5 years. Some batteries may last longer while others might require early replacement, depending the situation.
Maintenance Tip
How can I get the most out of my battery?
To extend the life of your Dodge Charger battery, follow these simple tips:
- ✓ Store indoors: Park your vehicle in a garage or shaded area to protect it from extreme temperatures.
- ✓ Drive it often: Regularly running the engine helps prevent long idle periods that can drain the battery.
- ✓ Secure the battery: Make sure the battery is tightly fastened—vehicle vibrations can cause damage or loosen cable connections.
- ✓ Inspect regularly: Check the battery and its cables during every oil change for signs of corrosion or wear.

FAQs
- Vehicle's Weight Balance: The battery in the trunk keeps heavy components away from the front axle to enhance handling and driving dynamics.
- Engine Bay Crowding: Having the battery in the trunk reduces crowding in the engine bay, allowing better airflow in the hood space and more room for other engine components.
- Protection from Engine Heat: A trunk-mounted battery is protected from the engine's heat, which can prevent overheating and extend the battery's lifespan.
To access this trunk-positioned battery, sometimes, you might need to remove carpet flaps or an air filter housing.
Important Note:
Reconnect vent hoses to batteries installed in the passenger compartment, trunk or otherwise not in the engine bay. These locations require proper venting out of the vehicle. Connect vehicle vent hoses to the battery vent port. Then plug the battery’s opposite-side vent port with a vent plug.
Depending on the year and make, it may be better to ask a professional to replace your Dodge Charger battery.
For model years 1977 and older, replacing the battery yourself may be easier. Watch our video guide on how to replace your vehicle battery for more details.
More technical expertise may be required to replace the battery on 2006 models and newer. Be sure to use a memory saver to prevent losing valuable computer data if you disconnect the car battery. That said, some Chargers might even require a security code to reinitialize some of the onboard electronics, such as the radio and infotainment system.
Whenever you visit a repair shop or service center, be sure to get a battery test to ensure that your Dodge Charger has a healthy battery at its heart.
The average lifespan of a Dodge Charger battery typically ranges from 3-5 years. This can vary based on several factors, such as weather conditions, battery type and driving habits. For example, extreme temperature climates and harsh cold weather conditions can shorten the life of the battery.
