FAQs

How Long Do Flooded Car Batteries Last?

A flooded battery’s lifespan depends on the usage, application and environmental factors. It’s recommended that you get a battery test every six months, especially if your battery is three years old or older.

Is a Flooded Battery a Standard Battery?

Yes, these are ways to describe a regular car battery. The terms “flooded”, “standard” or “traditional” are used to describe a car battery that’s not an absorbed glass-mat (AGM) battery or an enhanced flooded battery (EFB). “Wet cell” refers to the fact that regular car batteries have free-flowing liquid inside.

How Can You Tell If a Car Battery Is Flooded or AGM?

If you're uncertain what type of battery you have, check the label for "AGM" or mentions of "sealed", "non-spillable", or "VRLA". This indicates you have an AGM battery. (VRLA stands for valve-regulated lead-acid, a type of sealed battery.)

If the top of the battery has vent caps that you can remove or you see liquid inside it, then you’re looking at a flooded battery.

How Much is a Car Battery?
Car batteries may cost $160 to $300, depending on a battery’s group size and design type, such as whether it’s an AGM or a typical lead-acid battery. Numerous factors can affect the price of a battery, including the structure of the lead plates, the amount of paste material on them and different styles of envelopes. These factors, including the number and thickness of the lead plates and paste material, also contribute to how much power the battery has.
Which is Better, Lead-Acid or AGM?
Some makes and models require an AGM battery and would be damaged by a traditional lead-acid battery. Some vehicles’ alternators aren’t equipped to properly charge an AGM battery, potentially using too much voltage and overheating an AGM. In raw tests of longevity, strength and durability, AGM batteries outperform traditional lead-acid batteries; however, the “better” battery is the one your vehicle requires.
