Interstate’s involvement in racing as it is today began in the early 1980s with the Interstate Batteries Great American Race. For more than a decade, we sponsored this adventurous event as 100 vintage car owners raced their vehicles in a two-week rally across the country. The race spanned the United States from coast to coast, visiting both small towns and big cities.
In 1995, the premier race ventured across two borders starting in Ottawa, Canada, and ending in Mexico City for the one and only Interstate Batteries Great Race across North America.
This year Interstate Batteries is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Great American Race’s 25th Anniversary event. The 4,000-mile, coast-to-coast race across America begins June 30 in Concord, S.C., and finishes in Anaheim, Calif. The competition is in a rally format where racers are rated on their time-speed-endurance as they compete for a “perfect” time — low score wins. Each morning teams receive navigation information, with up to 400 separate driving instructions for the day. Race stops are usually combined with community events that are fun for the entire family. “One of the best things about the Great Race is that fans along the way get the chance to be up-close and personal with the drivers and navigators. We love being able to help provide this experience to people who love cars.”
