Look behind any brand you admire and you'll find a company with a strong sense of purpose. At Interstate Batteries, we've been living our purpose of enriching lives for more than 60 years. By putting words around what we've known in our hearts for years, we're able to get even better at it.
LOVE. Treat others as you'd want to be treated.
Living the Golden Rule is foundational to who we are. It compels us to put others first, care for and encourage people wholeheartedly all day, every day. Love calls us to trust, be generous, and to persevere, and to find the best in every situation. It drives us to speak the truth when it might be easier not to. Love gives us the strength to keep each other on the right path, and shows us the right thing to do when decisions get complicated. Love isn't a feeling, it's a choice.
SERVANT'S HEART. Lead with what people need.
Leading is serving and we're called to lead with humility. That means listening carefully and avoiding “me-first" thinking. The more open and tuned in to each of our stakeholders we are, the better we can serve their needs. We are called to be generous with our time, to help people grow, to be fair, to have tough yet kind conversations and to coach and encourage the team, especially when things don't go as planned. We want to serve in a way that adds meaning to what might otherwise be just a business transaction.
EXCELLENCE. Do great things with the gifts you've been given.
Doing things exceedingly well is a big deal for us. Pushing for excellence in everything we do helps us deliver consistently outstanding results. It also encourages us to turn away from complacency and never settle. We all bring unique gifts and talents to our jobs, and it is our responsibility to know our gifts and use them every day to create value. Excellence means getting clear on expectations, and rising up to meet and exceed them with a sense of urgency.
COURAGE. Learn, improve and boldy drive change that matters.
We believe in facing what's ahead with our eyes wide open and great confidence that we will succeed. We are curious, experiment with new ideas, seek other perspectives and expose ourselves to situations that will challenge us to improve. By looking for the possibilities, we can more easily overcome obstacles and keep improving. We move bravely toward the kind of innovation and change that keeps us leading the market.
FUN. Work hard, laugh often.
We take our work seriously, but not ourselves. We know that having fun together brings us energy and joy. The best ideas and conversations are sparked in an environment that inspires smiles, stories and laughter. Fun shows up all over Interstate, from organized events to the things that just happen spontaneously, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Life's just too short, right?
TEAM. Together, we're better.
As stakeholders, we're all part of the Interstate team and dependent on each other for our success. Each of us brings our own perspective and gifts every day, and when we bring our best thinking together we find creative solutions where we can all win. We search out the areas where we may lack understanding or alignment, and do all we can to keep our system strong.
INTEGRITY. Be who you are and live up to your commitments.
We bring our whole selves to work and take responsibility for our impact on others. We feel comfortable bringing the talents and personality that make us who we are, and we appreciate others' unique qualities. We do what we say and honor our commitments to others and when we fall short, we go the extra mile to make it right.
ANOTHER VALUE THAT POWERS ME. ______________
Inspire Interstate with the value that drives you and at the same time strengthens our team.
We believe taking care of our customers starts with taking care of our team members. We want to make sure every team member feels valued and is treated with dignity and respect. We have several programs and initiatives that help to reach that goal.
Miller Time. This once-a-month gathering provides a forum for team members to meet and talk with our CEO. Any question, any topic – Scott Miller answers them all.
Green Day.Green Day is a celebration where all the team members get together each year for a state of the company address and to feel appreciated. Team Members of the Year are announced, prizes are awarded and everyone has a great time.
Battery Bowl. The annual Battery Bowl is a field day of fellowship and friendly competition where all team members come together to battle.
LINK Team. The LINK team is a communication bridge between team members and upper management. Members are nominated and selected to serve a two-year term, where they organize events and activities, building community and engaging and promoting team members to live out the Interstate brand promise. They also foster team member understanding of Interstate direction and policies and gauge team member satisfaction, anticipating and resolving challenges.
►Green is more than just a color for Interstate Batteries. We have lead the way in recycling even before environmental programs became popular. Although we sell more than 17 million batteries each year, our recycle rate equals approximately 25 million spent batteries a year. Today, we're the No. 1 battery recycler of lead-acid batteries in the U.S., achieving one of the highest recycling percentages of most industries, including tires, aluminum, paper and plastic.
After a battery's useful life, its contents can become an environmental hazard. Interstate's comprehensive recycling system ensures compliance with all environmental and transportation laws. Our Green Standard-certified personnel handle batteries start to finish, and special packaging ensures stable and safe transport for every core. At Interstate Batteries, we make it easy being green.
►Our team members are our No. 1 priority. Founded on biblical principles, Interstate initiated a chaplaincy department about 20 years ago. Since then, the department has grown to offer a variety of services to employees, from volunteer opportunities, to kid summer camps to counseling referrals. They also offer access to daily devotionals, send email distributions of prayer requests and host speaker and ministry luncheons.
►How did Interstate end up on a nationally ranked list of Top Workplaces and recognized as one of the Top 100 Places to Work* for the past six years in a row? A recent Culture Audit by Interstate team members shows it's a combination of credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie. If you can't say that about where you work now, maybe it's time to discover a new culture. Ours.
